JTL, born in 1947, grew up in Farmington, Connecticut, the scene for her first children’s novel, The Dancing Cats of Applesap, (Bradbury Press, Richard Jackson ed.) published in 1984. Subsequently, she’s published 17 other novels for children. Her fourth novel, Afternoon of the Elves, won a 1990 Newbery Honor Award and was adapted as a play by the Seattle Children’s Theater. It continues to be performed throughout the US. Theater productions have also been mounted in Australia and The Netherlands. Other novels include The Art of Keeping Cool, winner of the 2001 Scott O’Dell Award for Historical Fiction, The Lost Flower Children, an ALA Notable book, and YA novels Black Duck and The Crying Rocks, both set in Rhode Island. Her most recent novel is Quicksand Pond, a 2018 ALA/ALSC Notable and Junior Literary Guild selection. She lives in Little Compton, RI.
